The Gorloks had about as strong and impressive of a game as they could as they defeated the Blackburn Beavers 10-0 in 7 innings. The Gorloks remain undefeated in the SLIAC at 7-0.

Starting pitcher David Mueller was dominant, pitching 7 shutout innings, allowing two hits, and striking out 12.

While Mueller only needed one run of support for this game, he ended up with a double digit lead.

Webster broke the scoring open in the 3rd inning when Tom Henke hit a two-run laser over the right field wall. Alex Kazmierski followed with a moonshot over the left field wall to put the Gorloks up 3-0.

From that point on, the Gorloks small-balled their way to victory. They put tallies up courtesy of stolen bases, infield singles, and long doubles in the gaps. Blackburn Freshman Pitcher Vinnie Birk couldn’t stop the bleeding.

The Gorloks will travel to Blackburn College tomorrow for a double-header, before squaring off with MacMurray at home on Tuesday night.

The Gorloks took on the always powerful Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Saturday afternoon in a double header, and the results were rather lopsided. The Titans took care of business at Blackburn Park, defeating Webster 9-0 in the first game, and 13-0 in the second matchup. Both games were called after five innings due to the mercy rule that comes into effect when a team leads by eight runs or more after five innings.

IWU pitchers Molly McCready and Alyssa Vorel were nearly unhittable, each allowing only one hit in their respective outings. McCready was one out away from a perfect game when her defense let her down on a Tabatha Bahre hit.

The saying goes that you can’t lose if the other team doesn’t score. However, you also can’t win if you don’t score. Webster did not plate a run, but IWU made it a habit.

While Gorlok pitching gave up a combined 22 runs, the hurlers did not pitch as poorly as the box score would indicate. Pitchers Trisha Thompson and Ashley Meagher (celebrating her 21st birthday) fell victim to bad luck as their defense let them down multiple times, and many hits found holes in the field even though hard contact was not consistently made.

The Gorloks’ Softball team fell to 4-14 on the season. Coach Eaton’s squad will begin conference play against Westminster College on Thursday, and that’s when the season really begins. Eaton loves to schedule extremely difficult non-conference games for his team (referred to as “preseason games”).

While the Gorloks have struggled early and the numbers don’t look pretty, it seems things will only get better and an entirely new softball team will appear come Thursday.

This is a game that will be over analyzed and obsessed over for months. By the Webster Men’s Basketball team, by Coach Bunch, by the Webster faithful, and even by the MacMurray fans. In a thrilling game, the Gorloks could not hold onto their lead at the end. In a startling loss, they fall to the #4 seed, MacMurray, 68-62.These two teams have had classic games before, but never anything quite like this. Not with the stakes so high. Not with such an unbelievable comeback where the Highlanders could do no wrong. Not with such an unbearable collapse late in the second half where the Gorloks looked like they had forgotten how to play the game.

Just last Saturday, the Gorloks and Highlanders got caught up in a 2OT thriller that Webster eventually won. No one thought another matchup would live up to that. But this game was even more startling.

It’s an overused cliche, but this was simply a game of two completely different halves. At halftime, the Gorloks had a 37-26 lead. MacMurray was continually shooting themselves in the foot (They turned the ball over 22 times in the game). In the second half, Webster kept MacMurray at bay for about the first 12 minutes, but then the Highlanders went on an unprecedented run and the Gorloks had no answer.

After being outscored by 11 in the first half, the Highlanders outscored the Gorloks 42-25 in the second half.

In the first half, the Gorloks shot45% from the field and 43% from behind the arc. In the second half, those numbers dropped to 29% and 27%.

In the first half, the Highlanders shot 55% from the field and 37.5% from behind the arc. In the second half, those numbers rose to 65% and 60%.

Like I said: a tale of two halves.

The taste of this game will not go away easily for the ‘Loks. They had the game in their hands, and they let MacMurray take it right back. They were the best team in the conference. They were the reigning SLIAC champs. They had the SLIAC Player of the Year in Stefan Whittingham. They had home court advantage.

But on a night filled with shock, the Gorloks ended their season with something they did not expect with 8 minutes left to go in this game.

A loss.
